| Q. | I am interested in hiring a contractor, but I am afraid of being taken advantage of. What guarantees do I have to protect me? |
| A. | First of all, you should only hire a properly licensed contractor. You can check on a contractor's license status by calling The California State Contractors Board at 1-800-321-2752, or check their website at www.cslb.ca.gov. Second, ask for references, and check on them. Any contractor worth hiring should be proud to give you references with phone numbers. Third, protect yourself with a contract that clearly explains the scope of the work to be performed, start and completion dates, and payment terms. For commercial clients this may be a purchase order instead of a contract. |
